KUALA LUMPUR – While the Umno Supreme Council deliberates on the nation’s latest political episode, a grassroots member expressed hope that Perikatan Nasional stays on to truly prove its mettle.

The branch chief, who asked to remain anonymous, said he hopes tonight’s meeting will agree on keeping things as they are until the next general election.

“The current government and its leaders haven’t had a chance to show what they can do with regard to the administration of the country.

“The media hasn’t given them a chance, and every time they are criticised, they have to focus on fixing their media image as opposed to fixing the country.”

Despite his close working relationship with top Umno leaders, he said Malaysian politics remains a “mystical arena”, adding that he believes it is deeply influenced by political dynasties.

“If a member is related to one of the country’s leader, he would also vie for a leadership position. That’s the reality of today’s politics.”
