RANAU – Five men suspected of making home-made firearms have been detained by police here.
Aged between 29 to 57, they were arrested and the locally made weapons, including bakakuk (shotgun), ginsuk (musket), an air rifle and several bullets, seized.
Ranau police chief Simiun Lomudin said police first arrested a 30-year-old at his home in Kg Kigiuk, where they found two guns, 11 bullets, 30 air rifle pellets and several gun-making equipment, which were seized.
“Following the arrest, police were able to arrest the remaining four suspects.
“Police confiscated seven more Bakakuks, 11 rifles along with bullets and pellets,” he said.
Simiun said the suspects are being investigated under Section 78 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 and face the death sentence, imprisonment and caning, if found guilty.
The suspects claimed the weapons were to be used to protect farms and for hunting. – The Vibes, September 20, 2021
