MIRI – Anxious parents have bombarded elected representatives with queries on the wisdom of reopening schools in Sarawak when Covid-19 infections and deaths continue to rise every day.
Andrew Gig, a parent, has asked state Public Health Assistant Minister Dr Annuar Rapaee to voice this concern to the higher authorities.
“Please enlighten the public why our daily infections are still so high, and yet we are reopening more in Phase 3 (of the National Recovery Plan), and schools are reopening too,” he asked in a question sent to Dr Annuar on Facebook.
A Sibu resident, Noni Ariffin, pointed out that Sibu Hospital is already overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients.
“Many infected are children. The situation is getting worse every day,” she said. “To open schools again is too risky.”
Many other parents too have queried the state Disaster Management Committee and Public Communications Unit on similar fears.
They are also sharing their worries on their social media chat groups.
Yesterday, Dr Sim Kui Hian said that the Covid-19 fatalities and infections caused by the Delta variant could have been worse, even as the state recorded another 26 fatalities and 2,413 new infections.
The state housing and local government minister said had it not been for mass vaccination, the impact would be worse than now.
