GEORGE TOWN – DAP is seeking to postpone its elections at both the state and national levels due to the Covid-19 threat, said its Penang secretary, Senator Lim Hui Ying.
According to its constitution, the party needs to hold its polls before December 31.
However, DAP is of the belief that it is best not to conduct the vote this year, said Lim in a statement, citing the pandemic.
She said national organising secretary Anthony Loke wrote to the Registrar of Societies on October 5 seeking a postponement of the party’s congress, where the elections were due to be held, due to the expected large turnout of some 4,000 delegates.
“More information will be shared with the delegates when RoS gives a response.”
She added that the DAP central executive committee has granted a six-month extension to all state committees, which were also scheduled to meet and hold a vote by the end of next month.
“This means that the Penang DAP convention, and therefore, elections, will be postponed to a future date, when the situation is safer and more conducive.”
Yesterday, Malaysia registered 957 coronavirus infections, with the country now having a total of 10,036 active cases.
Several DAP leaders confirmed that the party’s state-level polls have been deferred, but they are preparing for the possibility of national elections going ahead as scheduled as RoS has yet to approve the extension application.
Secretary-general Lim Guan Eng is in his fourth and final term in the post, as per the party charter.
