MIRI – Bukit Saban incumbent Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas has denied allegations that ruling coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak manipulated the statistics regarding Covid-19 cases and deaths to justify its push for a state election.
“There are claims circulating on social media that we have purposely marked down the daily tally of infections and deaths. There are certain quarters accusing us of manipulating these figures.
“They claimed in their social media postings that we are doing this to justify holding the state election. Their allegations are not true.
“The Covid-19 situation in Sarawak has improved due to our vaccination efforts as we are the first state to vaccinate the people and carry out booster shots,” he said after launching an agricultural project in Long Bemang, Baram.
Uggah was State Disaster Management Committee chairman and deputy chief minister before the legislative assembly was dissolved.
Today, the committee said Sarawak registered 137 new infections and two deaths.
Kuching district recorded 45 new cases and two fatalities. Miri has 16 more cases, with other districts registering a few cases each.
The committee also said border checks are being ramped up to make sure the new Omicron Covid-19 variant does not enter Sarawak via foreign carriers.
Sarawak heads to the polls on December 18, with nomination day falling on December 6 and early voting on December 14. – The Vibes, November 27, 2021
