GEORGE TOWN – Penang police are hoping to work closely with the hotel industry to tackle crimes involving hotel guests.
Deputy state police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh said police found that some of the criminal activities that had happened in hotels could be prevented with assistance from hotel management, especially security personnel.
“The security staff could alert police or provide information about suspicious characters who had used the hotels for their criminal activities,” Fisol told a media conference at St Giles Wembley Hotel after meeting with Penang hotel representatives.
Earlier, Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain had chaired the meeting and launched the community policing collaboration between police and the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) state chapter.
Also present were MAH Penang chapter chairman K. Raj Kumar and its secretary Tony Goh.
The event had been organised by the MAH Penang chapter, which was attended by the hotels’ security department heads as well.
“We handled robbery, theft, and rape cases that had occurred at hotels, and it would be much more helpful if the staff could provide information to police on suspicious characters in the hotels, so that we can prevent crimes from occuring,” Fisol said.
Raj Kumar said the Crash campaign is aimed at making hotels safe for guests and employees.
“We educate our employees in terms of safety, rights, observation techniques, and information gathering, so that they can be good witnesses and report suspicious characters and vehicles.
“We handled illegal activities such as credit card fraud, forgery, online gambling, and drug activities that had occurred in hotels,” he added. – The Vibes, December 8, 2021
