KUCHING – Politics reared its ugly head in Batu Kawah when a Christmas tree put up by DAP became the target of criticism and vandalism.
The brightly lit tree, which displayed the party’s rocket as the “Star of Bethlehem” on the top of the tree did not go down well with several supporters of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP).
Speaking to The Vibes, DAP candidate for Batu Kawah Dr Kelvin Yii said: “Callers believed to be pro-SUPP supporters criticised the party’s Yuletide display saying it will confuse Sarawakians as Christmas is a religious festival.
“Since when did our state become so intolerant over a symbol associated with a Christian festival, so much so that it can confuse Sarawakians of multi-ethnic groups including Malay-Muslims?
“We know that such pettiness is only prevalent in West Malaysia, where crucifixes and other Christian symbols on public display are said to be ‘confusing’ to Muslims. I find this claim by my political opponents hypocritical as they have often rebuked petty religious issues in West Malaysia as being intolerant and not socially acceptable.
“But this is Sarawak, the only state without an official religion and well recognised as the most tolerant state on matters pertaining to religious and racial issues.”
Yii said not only was the Yuletide display a target of criticism, but callers also ordered for the tree to be taken down.
“Yesterday the tree’s wire supplying power to it was snapped,” added Yii.
He said the tree, which was put up late on Monday night, symbolises the virtues of peace, love and joy.
“This is what Christmas is all about and these virtues resonate with DAP’s attributes toward making Sarawak a peaceful, lovable, and joyful state in every aspect including political integrity.
“This is what we treasure most in Sarawak: respect for every faith, culture, indigenous traditions, and the dignity of individuals and communities. By putting up the tree, we expected everyone to share this joy of oneness during the Christmas season of giving and sharing.
“The tree is located close to the Batu Kawah bridge facing the Batu Kawah river. It stands tall and beautiful and is in accord with state polls held during the Christmas season,” Yii added.
Asked if the party will take down the tree, Yii said: “No way.”
Yii is facing off in Batu Kawah in a four-cornered fight against SUPP incumbent Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Fong Pau Teck of Parti Aspirasi, and Chai Kueh Khun from Parti Bumi Kenyalang.
Sarawakians will go to the polls on December 18. – The Vibes, December 9, 2021
