KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz (Padang Rengas-BN) made a startling proposal in the Dewan Rakyat today when he suggested getting rid of the Independence Day celebrations in favour of Malaysia Day.
Pointing towards the federal constitution, Nazri put forth his jurisprudential view that the provisions in the nation’s most supreme legal document do not reflect the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
“If we look at the federal constitution, it says the federation of Malaysia is established under the Malayan Federation Agreement 1957.
“This is very embarrassing,” Nazri added.
The BN lawmaker also took the opportunity to ask why Independence Day remains even though Malaysia Day is being included in the present constitutional amendments.
Saying that Merdeka Day has no meaning to the federation, he suggested dropping the celebrations in favour of Malaysia Day.

“Drop Merdeka, it’s history. When we say Malaysia Day, only Sabah and Sarawak celebrate.
“This is the federal constitution, not the Malayan constitution.
“I wanna recommend that instead of only including Malaysia Day into the amendment, it should replace Merdeka too,” Nazri added.
Meanwhile, the Padang Rengas MP also took the opportunity to highlight a March 13, 2020 court ruling last year that saw the judiciary side with Sarawak on a matter concerning sales tax regulation.
Likening the union of peninsular and Bornean states to a marriage, he said all parties should solve issues among themselves, urging the federal government to take more consultative approaches with Sabah and Sarawak’s state governments.
“Going to court makes this like divorce proceedings. The court is adversarial.
