MIRI – Ballot boxes are making their way to counting centres in several rural constituencies as polling for the 12th Sarawak election draws to a close.

In the northern and central regions of Sarawak, ballot boxes are being taken from remote polling stations to counting centres where voting closes at 2pm.

According to Bernama, a total of 1,207 polling centres were closed at 2pm today.

Based on the list issued by the Election Commission, a total of 189 centres were closed as early as 11am while another 559 were closed at noon.

A further 243 were closed by 1pm followed by another 216 an hour later.

In the more populated locations, balloting centres are open until 5pm.

Sarawak United Peoples’ Party secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting told The Vibes that some official results may be known from 9pm onwards.

“So far, the balloting process is going well and results will start coming through from 9pm onwards,” he said.

The Election Commission said voter turnout was 48% as of 2pm.

A total of 1,866 polling centres involving 3,555 channels were opened at 7.30am.
