KUALA LUMPUR – The reopening of schools next year, which was scheduled for January 2 and 3, has been postponed by a week due to the floods which have hit the nation, said Education Minister Datuk Mohd Radzi Md Jidin.
In a Facebook video today, he said that schools in Category A states would now reopen on January 9, while those in Category B would reopen on January 10.
“It was previously announced that the school session for Semester 3 2021/2022 will start this January 2 for Group A and January 3 for Group B states.
“However, after considering the current flood situation in many states which have affected parents, students, and teachers, either directly or indirectly, the ministry decided to postpone the reopening for a week.
“We are also taking into account schools which have either been used as temporary flood relief centres or badly damaged by the floods,” he said.
Group A states are Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, which start their week on Sunday. Meanwhile, other states and federal territories which start their week on Monday fall under Group B.
Additionally, Radzi said his ministry cares for the welfare of teachers, students and parents in the context of the current flood situation.
“We are aware that this is a tough time for many and they will need time to make preparations to start the third semester of the 2021/2022 school term.
“We also pray for the best for all flood victims in the whole country. And God willing, any decision made by the ministry, we are always committed to take into consideration the welfare of the students, parents and teachers,” he added. – The Vibes, December 24, 2021
