KUALA LUMPUR – The Sg Selangor Phase 1, 2, and 3 and Rantau Panjang water treatment plants were shut at 12.20pm today after 8 TON (Threshold Odour Number) odour pollution was detected in Sg Selangor.

According to a statement by the Selangor Water Authority (Luas) at 6am today, the river's pollution level was at 0 TON. The 8 TON pollution was detected at the Rantau Panjang water treatment plant.

Luas, Air Selangor, and other relevant authorities are investigating the matter and carrying out immediate mitigation efforts.

The shutdown of four water treatment plants will affect Petaling, Klang, Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, Hulu Selangor, Kuala Langat and Kuala Selangor.

This is the latest water supply disruption to hit the Klang Valley this year. Just last month, millions of residents were faced with supply disruption that lasted several days.

The affected areas are listed in the statement below.

Just yesterday, the Selangor state assembly unanimously passed several amendments to the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) Enactment 1999.

Those guilty will face a mandatory jail term, while the fine has been increased from a maximum of RM100,000 to between RM200,000 and RM1 million.

Late last month, it was reported that Selangor was a victim of at least nine incidents of water pollution this year. – The Vibes, November 10, 2020
