MIRI – So goes the saying: “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.”
In the case of Sarawak, it’s some 18,000 single mothers who have been aided since 2015.
This was disclosed by state Women, Childhood and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah in conjunction with the state-level Women’s Day celebration today.
‘Some 18,000 single mothers throughout Sarawak have been given vocational skills training since 2015 until now.
“About 1,300 single mothers were also given business-related financial aid,” said Fatimah who represented Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg at the Sarawak Women Seminar at a hotel in Miri city.
Fatimah said the state government is concerned with the well-being of women at all levels.
“We want to see women progressing in society. We are concerned with their family development too and want them to be able to earn a decent living for themselves and their families,” she said.
Fatimah said the state also needs the support of the private sector to provide more opportunities for women to progress in various industries.
She noted that there is still plenty of room for improvement for women to excel in socioeconomic and political arenas. Women should be given a chance to take on more pro-active roles.
Hence, she called for greater cooperation from all so that more women can be actively involved in the development of the state. – The Vibes, March 8, 2022
