KUALA LUMPUR – Police have arrested four individuals, including a woman, believed to be involved in the pollution of Sg Selangor that led to a water supply disruption in the Klang Valley yesterday.

Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Fadzil Ahmat said the suspects, aged between 33 and 43, were nabbed in Gombak, Damansara and Kelana Jaya between midnight and early today.

He said initial investigations found that the woman was a nominee of a company registered with the Companies Commission of Malaysia that rented premises in Jalan Velox 2, Rawang, while a local man and his employee, a Bangladeshi, stocked chemicals on the premises.

In a statement today, Fadzil said the pollution is believed to have been caused by the dumping of chemical waste into a manhole on the premises.

He said police will apply for a remand order against the four suspects later today.

The probe is being carried out under Section 430 of the Penal Code for mischief leading to a water cut, he added.

The Rantau Panjang, and Sg Selangor Phases 1, 2 and 3 water treatment plants were forced to halt operations yesterday after the pollution was detected.

The plants resumed operations at 2.40am today, with Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd saying supply will be restored in stages beginning 3pm.
