KOTA KINABALU – Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has insisted that the youth-based party’s relationship with Warisan remains “very good” despite their prospects for cooperation being snubbed during the Johor election last month.
This was after the two parties had reportedly agreed to form an alliance late last year.
“Very good. I have been meeting with him (Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal),” Syed Saddiq told reporters after a town-hall dialogue with party followers here last night.
“Even after Johor (election) we did meet up and had many calls. He is someone who I do respect, and part and parcel of politics is trying to find a way to build stronger bridges together.”
Syed Saddiq said he would also be meeting with several Warisan friends during his trip to Sabah, stressing that a strong opposition is needed moving forward.
During the lead-up to the Johor polls on March 12, Shafie said that he had held discussions with Muda and Syed Saddiq on a possible political cooperation.
On another development, Syed Saddiq said the party is not focused on how many seats it would contest in Sabah in the forthcoming election.
He said party work is now more towards establishing presence within the community and getting to know the issues.
“We are now more focused towards having dialogues with community representatives and getting to understand their problems and issues.
“I think the people are fed up with parties talking about seats. Seat talks are much better if they are done behind closed doors and with allies,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sabah Muda chief Amos Thien said the party aims to officially launch its state chapter before the 15th general election, which is due by September next year.
“We will do it after we make a visit to all 25 parliamentary seats… we want to do it before the general election is called.
“So, every weekend we will go to every Parliament (constituency) to meet with supporters.
“Definitely, there’s no fixed date yet but we will try to do it by this year,” he said. – The Vibes, April 18, 2022
