GEORGE TOWN – Six policemen were arrested to assist in the investigation into the case of a detainee who escaped from the Bayan Baru Central Lockup here, last night.

State police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the policemen with the ranks of constable, corporal and lance corporal were remanded for three days starting today.

“We will conduct a detailed investigation into the incident if there is an element of negligence or the like.

“The six officers, in their 20s to 30s, are now remanded for three days to assist in the investigation according to Section 223/224 of the Penal Code,” he said when met at the Bayan Baru Ramadan Bazaar, today.

Shuhaily said in the midnight incident yesterday, a detainee known as Azizi Mohammad Hassan managed to escape from the lock-up.

The 33-year-old man was arrested on April 20 on suspicion of being involved in a drug case.

“The man involved was arrested in a raid in Jelutong and is awaiting a decision on whether to be detained under the Special Preventive Measures Dangerous Drugs Act 1985.

“Following the incident, we launched an operation to hunt down the man.”

Shuhaily said people who have information or had seen the suspect were asked to contact the nearest police station to assist in the investigation. – The Vibes, April 27, 2022
