GEORGE TOWN – The Penang chapter of Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) has shrugged off criticism following its proposal that the party ally with former ruling coalition Barisan Nasional (BN) in the coming 15th general election, stressing that they need a strong political ally to push their agenda forward.
Penang PBM chairman Alan Oh said their foray into the recent Johor election less than two months ago – where they lost all seats contested – was the clearest indication yet that the nascent party needs the support of a coalition like BN, with its vast experience contesting multiple polls and governing the nation.
“We cannot be going in alone. This is the reality on the ground,” he said.

PBM, which was formed late last year by defectors from opposition party PKR, was panned by opposition and ruling party leaders for having no direction in its politics after it proposed a partnership with BN.
However, Oh said PBM will need to sacrifice some of its political aspirations if it is to successfully secure a pact with BN, which he said are the better choice to lead the nation through this period of global uncertainty stoked by issues such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the still-ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
“Generally, the majority of the people want stability. This has always been the calling card of BN throughout the years. Only when we are secure can we plan ahead well,” he said.
“We feel that once political stability returns, the country can fulfil the expectations of each person here.” – The Vibes, May 3, 2022
