ALOR STAR – Kedah is pleading for Putrajaya to step in to speed up the RM1.8 million repair works of the collapsed bund at Terusan Tengah, Sg Santap near Jitra as 13,350ha of paddy fields are at risk.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said some 40,000 farmers will be affected if repairs are not expedited as water levels continue to drop at Terusan Tengah.

“I seek the help of the federal government through the Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry and the National Security Council as the bund repairs will affect as many as 40,000 farmers and it involves paddy yields of 66,750 metric tonnes,” he said at a press conference at Wisma Darul Aman today.

It was reported that repair works on the collapsed bund at Terusan Tengah, are expected to cost between RM1.5 million and RM1.8 million.

He said the incident that occurred on Monday was unexpected and caused a raw water supply disruption to several water treatment plants in the state, affecting about 80,000 accounts in Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Pendang and Yan.

On a separate matter, Sanusi said Kedah PAS has no problems working with Umno in the next general election.

“If Umno has any problems, that’s on them.”

Sanusi, who is PAS election director, said the party still adheres to the decision of the Syura Council, which is to work with Perikatan Nasional and strengthen Muafakat Nasional. – The Vibes, May 11, 2022
