KUALA LUMPUR – DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook has denied claims that party MPs have thrown their support behind Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s bid to regain the title of prime minister.
He said that if such rumours had any truth behind them, Muhyiddin would have already reclaimed his former post.
“If that is the case, he would have been sworn in as prime minister, right?
“Do you think DAP will give our support to Muhyiddin?” he said in a brief statement to Getaran, The Vibes’ Malay-language sister portal.
His statement follows Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, claiming that Muhyiddin contacted him two months ago to obtain support for his quest to become prime minister again.
Shafie reportedly said that the latter had told him that he has the support of 119 out of 222 MPs in the Dewan Rakyat and the approval of PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“I told him (Muhyiddin) that if you have the numbers, go ahead, but I will not follow you,” Shafie said.
In early 2020, Muhyiddin had been elected as the nation’s eighth prime minister and had served for 18 months before resigning from the post after losing support from a majority of MPs.
His proposed suggestion of bipartisan cooperation also did not receive positive responses from political parties.
He is now the chairman of the National Recovery Council on a ministerial level. – The Vibes, May 31, 2022
