GEORGE TOWN – The state government will hold discussions with all stakeholders this afternoon over the proposal to install a safety net along the 13.5km Penang Bridge.

State Environment and Welfare committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said any construction on the Penang Bridge requires the approval of the technical committee.

“This afternoon, we will be having a meeting with all parties, including marine police. We had a discussion but we still need approval for technical details.

“Installing a safety net is only part of it. We also have a suicide prevention committee established years ago,” he said when met at the state assembly today.

Phee said the state government will also install CCTV cameras with an audio system, and even hold a meeting with the media over reports on suicide cases.

In May, nine cases were reported at the Penang Bridge with five fatalities recorded. – The Vibes, June 1, 2022
