KUALA LUMPUR – As of November 16 this year, 50,889 students of public higher education institutions across the country are still staying on their campuses despite them being closed, Parliament was told today.
This figure is in addition to the more than 100,000 students of 234 private tertiary institutions who are also still on campus after the 2020/2021 registration session.
Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mansor Othman informed the Dewan Rakyat that these students were there due to their special needs and requirements.
“The ministry is aware and cares about the special needs of some of these students who require special technical facilities such as laboratories and those whose home environments are not conducive,” he said.
He said such students included those who need an internet connection to continue studying online.
“As of November 16, 2020, there are 50,889 students or 7.9% out of 646,094 public institutions of higher learning students who are still on campus.
Furthermore, the government also encourages students who require technical facilities such as laboratories and workshops to attend the physical classes instead of taking it up online, he added. – The Vibes, November 19, 2020
