KUALA LUMPUR – Pakatan Harapan (PH) will be discussing the terms of its memorandum of understanding (MoU) on political ceasefire with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s administration, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Speaking to a press conference on the sidelines of his party’s congress, the PKR president, however, stressed that it will not be part of Umno’s plan to force an early election.

At the same time, seeing that there is a new line-up in two of the coalition’s component parties, namely PKR and DAP, further deliberations are needed.

“There is a concern from the thinking public that the MoU has been used by the government to continue squandering the public (confidence).

“So, I think we have to discuss this at the PH level as DAP and PKR have new members in the PH council.

“But as for the interpretations of the MoU per se, it doesn’t necessarily end in July so we have to discuss further as we do not want to be seen as not focusing on the people’s issues and forcing the elections,” he said, reiterating the stance of not forcing a general election.

Anwar explained that there are numerous concerns that they still need to discuss with the government including matters related to corruption and the anti-hopping law.

Yesterday, PH vice-president Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said the opposition coalition is open to extending the MoU on transformation and political stability that it inked with the Umno-led federal government last September.

Salahuddin, who is also Amanah deputy president, said that the extension will depend on whether Ismail Sabri is willing to negotiate a review of the memorandum.

He added that there should be no problems in renewing the document after it expires on July 31, as PH welcomes suggestions for the betterment of the people. – The Vibes, July 17, 2022
