KUALA LUMPUR – The government should focus on reducing or eliminating excessive and obsolete regulations that are a source of annoyance for people and an avenue for corruption by enforcement officers, said Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM).

Melaka PSM chairman Sharan Raj said street corruption and the business-bureaucracy nexus would continue to bleed society if the root cause is not tackled.

In a statement today, he said for example that reforming the intake of migrant workers by consolidating all workers’ affairs with the Human Resources Ministry can greatly reduce corruption among immigration officers.

Sharan said another example of obsolete regulation was the need to purchase revenue stamps to apply for electricity and water connection.

“This regulation is the prime reason Malaysians cannot fully apply for electricity and water connection online.

“There may not be any corruption involved for acquiring utility connection but it’s just an example of obsolete regulation still in practice,” he said. – Bernama, November 23, 2020
