GEORGE TOWN – Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has joined the rest of the world in extending his condolences to the British royal family after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
“The queen’s steadfast devotion throughout her life-long service to the crown, her country, her people and the citizens of the Commonwealth may never be matched.
“Tributes pouring in from all corners of the world across countless generations and nationalities is a solid testament of the love and respect that befits a beloved queen.
“It is of profound sadness that the sun has set on the second Elizabethan era. Though a new reign will be welcomed, Her Majesty’s absence will be surely and sorely missed. Thank you, Ma’am, for everything,” he said after launching 5G services in the state, here today.
Chow also pointed out that it was the queen who granted George Town city status in 1957.
The city is also named after King George III, and Penang was first called Prince of Wales Island when Francis Light occupied it in 1786.
The queen had visited Penang on more than one occasion – once in 1972 and again in 1989.
Her death aged 96 was announced by Buckingham Palace in a short statement at 1.30am Malaysia time today, triggering a global outpour of tributes to her long life and record-breaking reign.
The eldest of her four children, Charles, Prince of Wales, who at 73 is the oldest heir apparent in British history, becomes king immediately.
The queen had apparently been suffering from mobility and health issues for the past 12 months, causing her to cancel many engagements on doctor’s advice.
