KUALA LUMPUR – Initial investigations into the shooting early today of two General Operations Force officers at the Malaysia-Thailand border showed that they were attacked by two groups of smugglers, said Datuk Seri Hamzah Zanudin.

In a statement, the home minister said the authorities suspect that the two groups comprised Malaysians and foreigners.

“I have been informed that a shooting incident took place at the border wall in Padang Besar, Perlis, at 3am today.

“We would like to convey our condolences to the victims’ families.”

He said police have been ordered to conduct a thorough investigation and identify the perpetrators.

“The government views this incident seriously and will not compromise with any parties, especially smugglers who commit cross-border crimes.”

The Vibes reported that Corporal Baharuddin Ramli, 54, died at the scene, while Corporal Norihan Tari, 39, is critically injured.

Norihan, who is now at Tuanku Fauziah Hospital in Kangar, is said to be in critical condition.
