KUALA LUMPUR – Selangor government staffer Jay Jay Denis has been questioned by Malacca police over a tweet posted last month that involved the state’s Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Rustam.

In a series of tweets, Denis said he was arrested and taken by three officers from the Alor Gajah police headquarters to Malacca yesterday afternoon, where he was questioned over his tweet posted on September 6.

The special officer to Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari was released around 11pm last night and had been assisted by lawyer Ambiga Sreenevasan among others.

He said his phone and SIM card had been confiscated by police.

In the allegedly offending tweet, Denis said Ali had been in an official car accompanied by around eight police outriders and three escort cars that blocked traffic on the Sprint Highway so that the Melaka governor’s vehicle could make a U-turn on the highway.

In a second tweet, he said the person who later emerged from the car was Ali, outside a restaurant where he had attended a family dinner.

“I thought it was an important official national event. But no,” Denis had tweeted.

He also tweeted after his questioning by police that the officers told him they had no choice but to “do this” on orders from “Malacca’s most powerful folks”.

“But this has renewed (my) energy to fight this corrupt system and that corrupt party Umno with all I have,” he added.

In August 2021, four men were charged in the Melaka sessions court over their retweets of a photo and text that allegedly insulted Ali.

The photo had been of the state governor visiting a gym in Kesang Tua where Filipino 2020 Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz had trained.

The four were charged under the Communications and Multimedia Act for improper use of communications network facilities to post content that allegedly annoyed or harassed another person. – The Vibes, October 10, 2022
