KUALA LUMPUR – Amanah communications chief Khalid Samad will not be defending Shah Alam, but will fight for the Titiwangsa parliamentary seat in the 15th general election (GE15).

This will see him face off possibly with Umno’s Datuk Seri Johari Ghani and Pejuang’s Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan, while incumbent Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun is unlikely to defend the Malay-majority seat.

Meanwhile, former Melaka chief minister Adly Zahari is set to run for the Alor Gajah parliamentary constituency, confirming earlier reports by The Vibes.

Five Amanah leaders will be defending their seats – president Mohamad Sabu in Kota Raja, deputy president Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub in Pulai, vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar in Pokok Sena, strategy director Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad for Kuala Selangor and Datuk Seri Mujahid Yusof Rawa in Parit Buntar.

Meanwhile, Amanah supreme council member Mohamed Hanipa Maidin will not defend his Sepang seat, making way for PH women’s chief Raj Munni Sabu @ Aiman Athirah Al-Jundi.

Also dropped are Datuk Mohd Anuar Mohd Tahir, Datuk Hasanuddin Mohd Yunus, and Datuk Hasan Bahrom of the Temerloh, Hulu Langat, and Tampin seats, respectively.

The Temerloh seat will be contested by Amanah Youth chief Mohd Hasbie Muda while the Selangor assemblyman for Taman Templer, Mohd Sany Hamzan, will run in Hulu Langat.

As for the Tampin seat in Negri Sembilan, Muhd Faiz Fadzil, who is a Penang state assemblyman, is set to contest.

This was announced by Salahuddin at a press conference here today.

He also told reporters that Amanah will contest in 54 seats for GE15, 19 more than the 2018 general election. Of the 54 candidates fielded, seven (13%) are women.

“Two or three other women candidates were proposed, but after negotiations with Pakatan Harapan component parties, we could not field them in the end,” said Khalid.

Notable women candidates fielded by Amanah include former MACC deputy commissioner Latipah Md Yatim, who will contest in Kedah’s Sik parliamentary seat.

Latipah, who once headed the anti-graft agency’s integrity division, is likely to take on Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor of PAS, who is the incumbent of the rural constituency.

Besides that, Nik Faizah Nik Othman, who was ostensibly behind the “white flag” campaign during the Covid-19 lockdowns, will run for the Pengkalan Chepa seat in Kelantan, where PAS’ Datuk Ahmad Marzuk Shaary is the incumbent.

The white flag campaign was launched in the middle of last year urging Malaysians facing dire straits to raise white flags outside their houses so neighbours and community members could come to their assistance.

In 2018, Nik Faizah ran for the Kelaboran state seat in Kelantan but lost her deposit after garnering a mere 1,970 votes out of the 28,498 total votes. – The Vibes, October 30, 2022
