KUALA SELANGOR – Gabungan Bertindak Malaysia, a coalition of 29 non-governmental organisations, has launched its #UndIklim-A Climate Emergency General Election initiative which will engage candidates of the coming general election (GE15).
The coalition – which includes Gabungan Darurat Iklim Malaysia (GDIM), Family Frontiers, and civil society organisations for reform – plans to get all GE15 candidates to participate in a 10-minute Zoom interview to garner their stand on climate issues.
GDIM communications coordinator Kennedy Michael said the coalition was looking for 60 volunteers to interview 945 candidates with template questions.
“We want to interview as many candidates as possible and they will be given a set of questions in advance,” he told The Vibes.
He called on volunteers to share their commitments and concerns on the climate emergency by filling up an online form in the next 13 days.
On whether it would be an uphill task to interview such a large number of candidates nationwide, he replied: “It won’t be a walk in the park but we have to do it.”
“A general election is the right opportunity to see whether the contesting candidates are serious enough to spend at least 10 minutes of their time and provide feedback on climate issues,” he added.
Stating that it was important to know the views of future lawmakers on environmental and climate issues, Kennedy said the recorded interviews would be uploaded to an MP profiling website.
“Our deadline to upload the recorded 10-minute Zoom sessions is two days before the election and from there, we will see how serious they are about climate issues,” he added. – The Vibes, November 5, 2022
