JOHOR BARU – A 56-year-old man was reported missing during a hiking trip with about 20 friends in Bukit Durian, Batu 10 in Pagoh, yesterday.

The Fire and Rescue Department was alerted of the incident at 12.59am today, about seven hours after the victim, identified as Goh Sang Seng, disappeared.

“When the operations team arrived at the location, they confirmed that a man, 56, had gone missing during a hiking trip with about 20 of his friends in Bukit Durian about 6pm (yesterday).

“His friends went looking for him in that area, but couldn’t find him,” Pagoh Fire and Rescue station operations commander Mohd Fadli Ismail said in a statement today.

Fadhli said an 11-member team from the Pagoh Fire and Rescue station was deployed to carry out a search-and-rescue operation to locate the victim.

Johor police detain 10 illegal World Cup bookies

Meanwhile, 10 illegal bookmakers have been detained by police in Johor under a special operation dubbed Ops Soga IX, in conjunction with the 2022 Qatar World Cup, to combat illegal gambling.

In a statement today, Johor police chief Kamarul Zaman Mamat said they arrested 10 suspected bookmakers in 10 separate raids between Monday and yesterday.

The suspects – aged between 22 to 43 – were believed to be acting as bookmaking agents with an overall credit limit that reached up to RM1,059,786, said Kamarul Zaman.

“Also seized was RM9,730 in cash, 10 mobile phones including sim cards, and a memo pad with records of suspected 2022 Qatar World Cup betting.”

He said all suspects are now under remand and the case is being investigated under Sections 4(1)(d), 6(1), and 6(3) of the Betting Act 1953. – The Vibes, November 25, 2022
