KUALA LUMPUR – Nineteen investigation papers have been opened against Top Glove Corp Bhd for failing to comply with the Workers' Minimum Standard of Housing and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446), said the Department of Labour Peninsular Malaysia today.
This comes after mass Covid-19 infections among its workers in Meru, Klang over the recent weeks. As of yesterday, the Top Glove cluster saw 5,805 screenings and 3,406 workers tested positive.
Malaysiakini reported that the decision to investigate the world’s biggest rubber glove manufacturer came after the Labour Department conducted simultaneous operations on the company’s worker accommodations in five states – Perak, Kedah, Kelantan, Negri Sembilan and Johor on November 26.
Department director-general Mohd Asri Abd Rahman in a press conference said several offences were recorded after raids on six Top Glove subsidiary companies.
“The companies failed to apply for accommodation certifications from the department under Section 24D of Act 446,” he was quoted as saying.
Other violations include dense accommodation and hostel, poor ventilation and living conditions.
Yesterday, Senior Minister (Defence) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob extended the enhanced movement control order on the Meru dorms until December 14.
Under Act 446, employers who are found guilty could face a maximum fine of RM50,000 for each offence.– The Vibes, December 1, 2020
