[UPDATED] MCMC to liaise with telcos on flood relief centres’ WiFi services: Fahmi Fadzil

KUALA LUMPUR – The Communication and Digital Ministry has instructed the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to intensify efforts with mobile network operators in ensuring the availability of WiFi services in flood relief centres  

Its minister Fahmi Fadzil told MCMC to look into this matter in flood-hit Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang. 

In a press conference today, he said MCMC must communicate with the telecommunication companies to activate WiFi in the relief centres, although many such centres have internet access available to evacuees. 

“At the same time, I have asked MCMC to monitor all telecommunication towers in the affected areas to ensure that the facilities can be used immediately after flood water has receded.”

“Additionally, friends from the media can reach out to my office directly if they are facing any issue with coverage on the field so that they can be resolved immediately,” he added. 

Meanwhile, Fahmi said the ministry is ready to provide assistance to flood victims, especially during the recovery period.

He added that the ministry has had a disaster relief fund since December 2021.

“Initially, it was a contribution from agencies under the ministry’s purview, but it has been extended to include strategic partners.”

So far, he said his ministry has received a total of RM6.15 million collected in cash and kind, and RM4.2 million remained unused.

“We are trying to prepare boxes of essential goods and food valued at RM200 each as well as cash assistance for every affected household.

“We also plan to offer volunteer services to clean affected houses after the floods recede. The locations will be announced later.” – The Vibes, December 21, 2022
