GEORGE TOWN – The luxury super yacht linked to the multi-billion dollar 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal is now in waters off Penang.
Tranquility, the vessel previously known as Equanimity, was seen anchored near the Swettenham Pier (SPTC) Cruise Terminal, near the ferry terminal here.
It is understood that the luxury yacht is owned by resort operator Genting Malaysia Bhd (Genting), and has been in Penang waters for the past few weeks.
Security guards at a private parking area at the jetty, who declined to be named, said the yacht has been seen anchored there for the past few days.
"The super yacht was also seen moving to and fro over the past few weeks. No one knows who the passengers on the yacht are."
He said the presence of the super yacht has attracted curious onlookers, with many seen taking pictures and trying to get a closer view.
In October last year, it was reported Genting had offered US$200 million (RM836.65 million) to interested buyers for the yacht.
A sale was reported just six months after Genting bought the yacht from the Malaysian government in April last year for US$126 million.
Genting had also offered it out to rent for US$1.43 million a week.
The yacht had been among assets believed to have been bought by Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low, with funds linked to 1MDB.
