KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) today issued a severe (red-level) weather warning for several areas in Kelantan and Terengganu.
MetMalaysia director-general Jailan Simon in a statement said it involved Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Bachok and Pasir Puteh in Kelantan; and Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Kuala Terengganu and Marang in Terengganu.
“Very heavy rain is expected to continue (in the affected areas) until tomorrow,” he said.
He said a bad weather warning (orange-level) was issued for Tanah Merah and Machang in Kelantan as well as Hulu Terengganu, Dungun and Kemaman in Terengganu, with heavy rain expected to continue until tomorrow.
Meanwhile, a yellow-level weather alert with expected heavy rain was issued for Perlis, Kedah, Penang and the Hulu Perak district in Perak for today, while it is expected to continue until tomorrow in Jeli and Kuala Krai in Kelantan; and Jerantut, Temerloh, Maran, Kuantan, Bera, Pekan and Rompin in Pahang.
“During this period, strong winds can occur, especially along the coastal areas in the East Coast states of the Peninsula,” he said.
Jailan also said that most areas in the west coast states and territories in the Peninsula, namely Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor as well as the interiors of Pahang, west Sabah and west Sarawak were expected to experience thunderstorms and heavy rains with strong winds, especially in the evenings.
“This situation has the potential to cause flash floods in low-lying areas as well as damage to unsustainable structures,” he said.
He also said strong northeasterly winds with speeds of 50 to 60 km/h and waves reaching 4.5m high could occur in the waters of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang, and posed the risk of an overflow of seawater along the coast and estuaries. – Bernama, December 3, 2020.
