BANGKOK – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has pledged to assist in facilitating peace in Southern Thailand, where skirmishes between the country’s authorities and discontent Muslims have been ongoing for decades.
In a joint speech with Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, Anwar said that it is Malaysia’s duty as good neighbours and members of the Asean family to help out “The Land of Smiles”.
“I’ve come here with a categorical message that the (Malaysian) government doesn’t condone any sort of violence to resolve conflict. We will exercise our rights as friends, as family members, to express our legitimate concerns whilst acknowledging that South Thailand is an internal issue.
“But it is our duty as good neighbours and family to do whatever is necessary to facilitate (the peace) process. That is why we agree to appoint an acceptable facilitator from a retired chief of our armed forces, known to the prime minister (Prayut) to work and find ways to assist,” said Anwar.
Earlier, it was reported by Benar News that retired chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces Tan Sri Zulkifli Zainal Abidin will be replacing former inspector general of police Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Noor to facilitate peace talks in the region.
Anwar said he will also leverage the fact that many Southern Thai Muslim leaders are familiar with him due to their personal relationship.
“I am personally known to many colleagues in the south and the trust deficit, concern on issues of culture, religion will be addressed. And the (Thai) prime minister agreed on the importance of developing our bilateral relationship.
“Through investments, trade, and development, I am optimistic we can resolve this. It is unfortunate these small skirmishes have led to distrust, resentment and we have to appeal to both forces – in Thailand, the south, and even in Malaysia – to understand that peace is paramount,” he said. – The Vibes, February 9, 2023
