KUALA LUMPUR – Floods in Kelantan and Pahang have worsened with more victims evacuated while the situation in Terengganu is improving.
The number of flood victims evacuated in three districts in Kelantan continued to rise to 400 people as at 8am today, compared to 323 people yesterday afternoon.
According to the Social Welfare Department’s website, a total of 87 victims from 18 families are sheltered at three temporary evacuation centres in the Kota Baru district, with 26 victims at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Melor, 50 at SK Tiong and 11 at Islamic Outreach ABIM in Kok Lanas.
Pasir Puteh recorded the highest number of evacuees, who are being accommodated at six flood relief centres, namely the Kamil Complex Hall which houses 67 victims, SK Changgai (17), SK Bukit Jawa 2 (37), SK Kamil 3 (44), SK Sg Petai (23), and SK Wakaf Raja (31).
In Pasir Mas, a total of 74 victims from 16 families are taking shelter at SK Gual Tok Deh and 20 victims at SK Kubang Kual, while the centre at Balai Raya Padang Kijang, Tanah Merah which had previously sheltered 12 victims from three families is now closed.
Meanwhile, according to the Irrigation and Drainage Department’s website, the water in Sg Golok in Rantau Panjang at 8am today exceeded the 9m danger level at a reading of 9.59m, but is reported to be receding.
In Pahang, the number of flood victims has increased from 109 victims from 34 families to 156 victims involving 52 families since yesterday afternoon, with eight evacuation centres operating in Raub.
According to the JKM disaster information mobile application, the evacuation centre at SK Ulu Sungai places the most evacuees, involving of 42 people (11 families) from Kg Sg Ulu, followed by Kg Kuala Semantan Mosque (38 people, 12 families), Kg Pia multipurpose hall (26 people, 10 families), and Kuala Temau Mosque (16 people, seven families).
Apart from that, the Kg Sengkela community hall shelters 12 flood victims from four families, SK Tersang (11 victims, three families), Kg Batu Talam Umno hall (six victims, four families) and Kg Chenua community hall (five victims, one family).
According to the website publicinfobanjir.water.gov.my, the water in Sg Jempol in Ran Felda Jengka, Maran, has passed the alert level recording 29.6m.
In Perak, the stagnant floodwaters in Kg Matang Tengah, Beriah, in the Kerian district are forcing 27 victims to remain at the centre at SK Changkat Lobak, Bagan Serai as of 8am today.
In Terengganu, the flood situation has improved with the number of victims declining to 1,621 people from 416 families as of 8am today, compared with 2,130 people from 550 families at 4pm yesterday.
This is due to the closure of 10 evacuation centres – five in Besut, two in Marang, two in Hulu Terengganu, and one in Dungun, bringing the latest number of centres still operating to 48.
State disaster management committee secretariat head Che Adam A. Rahman said the highest number of victims was in Marang with 527 evacuees from 138 families compared with 769 evacuees from 203 families yesterday afternoon.
In Dungun, the number of victims declined to 166 from 190. Besut declined from 359 victims from 385, Setiu declined 268 victims from 294, Kemaman declined 43 victims from 116, Kuala Nerus declined 134 victims from 218, and Kuala Terengganu declined from 139 to 124 victims. – Bernama, December 4, 2020
