KUALA LUMPUR – Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, Johor Umno chief Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, and Federal Territories Umno chief Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani have won the three Umno vice-president’s posts.

The confirmation came as Umno election committee chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Samad announced the matter during a press conference at the party’s headquarters here.

The trio beat five other candidates vying for the posts during Umno polls, which culminated yesterday.

According to Shahrir, the official tally saw Wan Rosdy garnering votes from 124 divisions as of 2pm today.

Khaled successfully defended his Umno vice-president post after the Kota Tinggi MP obtained votes from 114 party divisions while Johari secured his position as one of the three Umno vice-presidents after he received votes from 107 divisions.

“There are still four divisions remaining which have yet to submit their election results.

“The committee, however, believes that the outcome of the polls at these four divisions will not change the current standing,” Shahrir said.

Despite a bid to defend his Umno vice-president post, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid failed to get re-elected.

Former party vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob opted not to defend his post.

Other vice-president candidates are Pengerang MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, former Kepala Batas MP Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, Simpang Renggam MP Datuk Hasni Mohammad, and Iskandar Puteri division member Mohd Yusof Musa.

A total of 189 divisions participated in the party polls.

The tabulation, however, is not based on a simple majority or first-past-the-post system.

For the vice-president’s post, each division will have to vote for three names out of eight contenders.

The three names picked by each division will then be counted as a vote for each respective contender, according to the polling system practised by Umno. – The Vibes, March 19, 2023
