KUALA LUMPUR – The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has received positive feedback on its idea to expand the Rahmah initiative to the insurance sector, said minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub.
Speaking to reporters today, Salahuddin said that the first company to respond to the ministry’s proposal was Maybank Group member Etiqa, which appeared to be receptive to initiating future work under the Rahmah programme.
“I have asked my officers to hold an engagement session (with Etiqa) for us to discuss how we can succeed with initiatives (allowing citizens to enjoy more affordable insurance coverage rates).
“Maybe we can offer Rahmah insurance on vehicles, housing, real estate, and the like,” he said when met after attending the Kenduri Menu Rahmah programme in Parliament today.
Etiqa is composed of four main operating entities in Malaysia, namely Etiqa General Insurance Bhd, Etiqa Life Insurance Bhd, Etiqa General Takaful Bhd, and Etiqa General Takaful Bhd.
Salahuddin also reiterated that he has asked International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz for help to arrange engagement sessions with banking industry players.
Last week, the Pulai MP said his ministry had received ideas from the banking sector on how the Rahmah initiative can be used to help those with lower incomes.
Menu Rahmah is a government initiative to help reduce cost-of-living burdens, especially among the needy, and to allow them to purchase well-balanced meals priced at RM5 and below.
It is participated by private food and beverage companies on a voluntary basis.
As of February 16, a total of 512 business premises have registered with Menu Rahmah nationwide. – The Vibes, March 20, 2023
