GEORGE TOWN – George Town Heritage Action Group co-founder Mark Lay was released from police custody at 8.30pm yesterday after being questioned.

He said he was told to be present at the police headquarters here after a report was lodged accusing him of trespassing into a heritage property.

Lay, in a text exchange with The Vibes, said that he was tired but recovering from the experience.

Fellow heritage activists such as Khoo Salma Nasution had voiced concern over Lay’s questioning by police.

He has been exposing in the past four months, alleged controversies in the heritage core and buffer zones in Penang.

The Penang Island City Council plans to hold a town hall session with civil society groups and community leaders tomorrow.

Lay plans to attend the town hall unless he is barred. 

Meanwhile, Penang is gearing up for the annual George Town Heritage celebrations in July to celebrate the 15th anniversary of George Town’s listing as a Unesco World Heritage Site. – The Vibes, April 14, 2023
