KUALA LUMPUR – Police have arrested 19 Chinese nationals in raids on condominium units in Setapak and Jalan Tun Razak here for allegedly running an illegal online gambling call centre.

Wangsa Maju district police chief Rajab Ahad Ismail said acting on information, police conducted three raids from December 4 to 7, which resulted in the arrest of 18 men and one woman, who were all Chinese nationals aged between 21 and 39.

“Police seized 15 laptops, 49 mobile phones and other electronic devices used for online gambling,” he said in a statement today.

He said further investigations found that the syndicate’s modus operandi was to promote online gambling to the international market in China using mobile applications such as Wechat, WhatsApp, and QQChat.

“These syndicate members would send hundreds of text messages to customers in China and have been doing it the past three months,” he said.

Rajab said the condominium units, which were rented for RM1,500 to RM5,000 a month, served as the syndicate’s operations centre from 8am to 8pm every day.

He said all the suspects have been remanded for 14 days starting from December 8 for investigations under Section 4(1)(g) the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. – Bernama, December 9, 2020
