GEORGE TOWN – Penang residents should file police reports against Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor for insisting that the state still belongs to Kedah, said former chief minister Lim Guan Eng.
Lim, who is also DAP chairman, said that filing the reports was the best way to address the issue as it allowed authorities to investigate the matter and take appropriate action against Sanusi.
“We should lodge reports against Sanusi for creating public disaffection and trying to cause enmity between the people of Kedah and Penang by claiming Penang still belongs to Kedah,” Lim said in a statement.
Lim said Sanusi’s remarks does not only affect 1.8 million Penangites, but both Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Deputy Minister in Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Ramkarpal Singh had also rebuked the menteri besar for allegedly failing to understand the law and denigrating the federal constitution.
Lim also noted that the Kedah sultan did not dispute Penang’s right to exist as a state when the ruler consented to the federal constitution, which recognises Penang as one of the 13 sovereign states in Malaysia.
The DAP politician said Sanusi was leveraging the issue to gain political mileage in the upcoming state elections.
“Gaining political mileage is an irresponsible and reckless move when such baseless and non-existent claims can create public disaffection amongst the people and appear to be trying to cause public enmity amongst the peoples of Kedah and Penang.”
Lim said although all the facts and related laws have shown that Sanusi is mistaken in his claim, the Jeneri assemblyman refuses to retract his statements.
“By provoking and questioning Penang’s sovereignty and right to exist as a state, Sanusi is a public danger to the peace and security of the nation,” Lim said.
“1.8 million Penangites should lodge police reports to press for action against Sanusi to protect Penang and prevent ‘political interlopers’ from invading our state to ensure that we can continue our lives peacefully and enjoy prosperity.”
Lim said Penang PAS should state their stand on whether they will disassociate from Sanusi.
“Should they fail to do so, then PAS should not contest in the coming state elections if they cannot fully represent the interests of Penangites as well as defend, protect, and preserve the federal constitution,” said Lim. – The Vibes, May 31, 2023
