MIRI – It was a devastating start to the Gawai Dayak festival for some 45 residents when their wooden houses in the Pujut Corner squatter colony here caught fire at 5.30am today.

The houses were razed to the ground, but all of them escaped unscathed.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department today said there were 45 people living inside three structures, and the firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to the rest of the colony.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
