MIRI – A longhouse known as Rumah Nyalai in central Sarawak was burnt to the ground around 8pm last night, said the state Fire and Rescue Department today.

Firefighters from the Sibu station received an emergency alert and rushed to the site but the structure was already almost destroyed.

At least 80 people were living in the longhouse’s 12 housing units but no one was hurt in the incident, said the department in a statement.

The cause of the fire is being investigated while the extent of the damage has yet to be determined.

This is the second longhouse fire in central Sarawak in the past four days.

On May 30, the Rumah Selusin longhouse in Pakan district was razed, leaving some 100 people homeless. – The Vibes, June 2, 2023
