SINTOK – Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail described comedian Jocelyn Chia’s jokes that belittled Malaysia and made fun of the MH370 tragedy as insensitive and offensive.
He said no sane and rational human being can accept jokes that are derogatory, insulting and mocking as the woman delivered, even in the name of freedom of speech.
“We hope it is an isolated case, the Singaporean government has issued a public apology and some of our leaders have also publicly condemned the action.
“This is an example of how things could go when there is no discipline and consideration of other people’s feelings, and making fun of events relating to the loss of life and grief should not be a subject of humour,” he said during the Ikon Madani Townhall at Universiti Utara Malaysia here yesterday.
He said this in response to a question from a student who wanted to know his views on the actions of the standup comedian who made fun and belittled the country, including by mentioning the MH370 tragedy that hit the country.
A few days ago, a video clip went viral on social media showing a female comedian who originated from Singapore mocking Malaysia in a comedy show titled “Singapore vs Malaysia” held in New York, the US, recently.
The Ikon Madani Townhall programme is an initiative of Yayasan Prihatin Nasional in collaboration with the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation and the Federal Territories Taqwa Foundation, based on a conversational concept aimed at students and future graduates in institutions of higher learning. – Bernama, June 11, 2023
