KUALA LUMPUR – A PAS lawmaker has proposed adopting a rehabilitation approach for the LGBT community to guide them back onto the “right path”.
During a debate on the Human Rights Commission’s (Suhakam) Annual Report 2020, Datuk Awang Hashim (Pendang-PN) said that the LGBT lifestyle not only contradicts Islam, but is also likely to be in conflict with the teachings of other religions.
“We must bear in mind that these practices are in opposition to Islam, which is the religion of the federation.
“I am also confident that this is contrary to the teachings of other religions. If I am mistaken, please correct me,” Awang told the Dewan Rakyat.
Advocating for measures to address what he perceived as the issues of the LGBT community, Awang called for intervention to tackle this phenomenon.
Drawing a comparison with addiction and drug abuse, he proposed a rehabilitation approach, emphasising the significance of healing and rectifying the “disorientation” based on Islamic teachings to align individuals with the “right path”.
Expressing concern over movements promoting what he described as “unhealthy behaviours”, the Pendang MP urged government-level intervention to prevent the proliferation of such practices within the country.
He asserted that prompt treatment should be provided to the LGBT community to assist them in swiftly returning to what he considered the appropriate course.
Earlier today, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said proposed a debate on the 2020 Suhakam report.
Addressing the lower House, Azalina – who handles law and institutional reforms – said that the debate on the report would highlight the government’s commitment to safeguarding human rights across various sectors of society.
The Dewan Rakyat last tabled and debated Suhakam’s 2019 annual report in December 2019. – The Vibes, June 12, 2023
