KUALA LUMPUR – Former Umno Supreme Council member Tan Sri Noh Omar confirmed he will not be contesting in the upcoming state elections under Perikatan Nasional (PN).
He said this decision was to give opportunities to younger leaders to represent the people of Selangor.
“I am not contesting in the upcoming state elections, (I think) it is enough for now,”
“I want to give a chance to new faces, as in Selangor itself, there are many young figures who can be highlighted,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
Instead, Noh said he would be travelling around Selangor to ensure that the Barisan Nasional-Pakatan Harapan (BN-PH) coalition is defeated in the polls, believing PN can take the state if there is only a two-cornered fight against BN-PH.
“That is why when I was Umno’s liaison committee chairman, I told the leadership to ensure there isn’t a three-cornered fight in Selangor between BN, PH, and PAS, as it will jeopardise the party,” he said.
“I said we needed to find a way to avoid three-cornered clashes, and my prediction will be confirmed when PH wins, while PAS and BN lose in Selangor – just like in the 14th general election,” he added.
Noh opined BN could have won at least 10 parliamentary seats in Selangor if three-cornered fights did not occur in the recent general election.
He also expressed his disappointment with Umno’s decision to work with its former enemies – DAP and PH – under the unity government.
Earlier this year, Noh, an Umno member for over 30 years, was sacked from the party after claiming that it had strayed from its original struggle. – The Vibes, June 18, 2023
