KOTA KINABALU – Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Joachim Gunsalam has defended the Sabah Housing and Urban Development Board’s (LPPB) decision to evict tenants who have occupied their public housing units for over 10 years.
He said those renting homes in People’s Housing Projects (PPRs) should give others in the B40 income bracket the chance to benefit from the government’s low-cost housing scheme.
“For instance, during this period, their children could have started working and eventually helped them find a better and more comfortable place to live.
“However, if they still fall under the B40 category after 10 years and wish to continue residing in PPRs, they can reapply and renew their eligibility," he said today
As the state local government and housing minister, he emphasised that the government had allowed them to rent the LPPB units at significantly reduced rates for ten years, and that the eviction policy has been strongly established.
Joachim was responding to news on the LPPB issuing eviction notices to PPR tenants who have lived there for more than ten years, such as those in Taman Jayadiri and Taman Bukit Setia in Kuala Manggatal, as well as Taman Puri Warisan.
