MIRI – A gang of bogus women “mediums” allegedly led by a Chinese national have struck again in Sarawak, this time cheating a “cursed” elderly noodle seller in Sibu out of a whopping RM 231,792 in “curse-cleansing rituals”.
The 65-year-old noodle seller at Sibu Central Market had been frightened into paying her life savings to three women mediums – one whom she said is a Chinese national and the other two being Sarawakians.
Sarawak state police chief Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri today said the victim lodged a police report at the Sibu district police station.
“This latest case was on June 23, with the victim being a noodle seller in the Sibu Central Market.
“She reported that she lost RM 231,792 of her savings to the mediums for an alleged curse-cleansing ritual.
“In her police report, the victim said she was approached by three women at her workplace in the Sibu Central Market.
“The victim said the three women told her they are mediums…(they allegedly told her) they could ‘read’ that she is being cursed by bad fortune and that she will soon be involved in a deadly accident.
“They managed to frighten her into letting them perform a ‘curse-cleansing ritual’ to get rid of her curse,” Azman said in a statement today.
The victim was subsequently coaxed into withdrawing her life savings of RM231,792, he said.
“The victim was instructed by the ‘mediums’ to withdraw all her savings, then put the money into a bag, which must be blue in colour, and hand over the bag to them.
“The so-called mediums later carried out a ‘cleansing prayer ritual’ over the victim and returned the blue bag to her.
“They told her that she cannot open the bag for the next one month and had instructed her to go home,” he said.
The elderly woman went home but started feeling very uneasy.
The next day on June 24, she opened the blue bag and found that there was no more money inside, Azman said, adding that the victim went to police after realising that she had been scammed.
This latest case in Sibu is the second reported one involving bogus China “mediums” in Sarawak. – The Vibes, June 28, 2023
