KUALA LUMPUR – Tesla will be setting up its headquarters in Selangor, this year, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar said this following a virtual meeting with Tesla chief executive officer Elon Musk this morning, together with Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz and Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

In a statement on Facebook, Anwar said he welcomed Tesla’s interest and decision to invest in Malaysia.

He said Musk had also expressed his readiness to visit Malaysia soon.

“I also congratulated him and stated the government’s support over the establishment of Tesla’s headquarters as well as service and experience centres in Selangor this year.”

“Malaysia is also committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions from 2050 at the earliest,” said Anwar, who is also the finance minister.

He also praised SpaceX’s decision to operate as an internet service provider.

“By using low-orbit satellites it would lead to faster and wider internet connectivity, especially in rural areas.

“This in turn will help boost the welfare of the people around the world and it only needs a minimal land space to enhance global internet connectivity,” said the prime minister.

He added that Malaysia has a comprehensive plan and ecosystem as well as the resources to support the clean energy industry, including electric mobility. – The Vibes, July 14, 2023
