KUALA LUMPUR – In a surprise move, MIC announced its decision to support Pakatan Harapan in the upcoming state elections.

Party president Tan Sri S.A. Vigneswaran made the announcement after a key meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at MIC headquarters here today.

The shift in MIC’s support comes as a sign of respect to Anwar, who had personally engaged in talks with the party leadership.

Vigneswaran also ordered the party’s machinery nationwide to go on the ground and campaign for PH in the six state elections.

The meeting today was said to discuss MIC’s alleged mistreatment by Umno.

Vigneswaran said MIC had received “good offers,” but did not provide further details or accept them.

MIC’s unease over its position as a BN component party had been growing for several months. The party expected to be considered for a ministerial post in the cabinet, but the appointment did not materialise.

Vigneswaran said no GLC positions were also given. “It’s not that we want government posts, it’s about respect,” he added.

The party also felt sidelined by Umno during seat negotiations with PH and that Umno was too assertive.

During the meeting, Anwar urged MIC leaders to trust him and promised to address their concerns about representation and issues affecting the Indian community.

He said he needed one year to tackle issues involving poor Malaysians, including those in the Indian community.

On MIC’s representation in the government, he said it will be discussed with other party leaders and BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He added that he does not see this as being difficult.

“I must say that you have shown me enough confidence and respect. And I’m very appreciative of that,” he said when addressing MIC leaders and members.

“It is fully my responsibility to reciprocate and respect the ethnic Indians, including MIC, who represents them.

“As much as I trust Vigneswaran, you need to trust me.”

As the state elections draw closer, all eyes will be on how the dynamics between MIC, PH and BN unfold.

The political landscape in Malaysia seems to be experiencing shifts and realignments, making the outcome of the elections even more unpredictable. – The Vibes, August 2, 2023
