PETALING JAYA – Malaysia’s oldest man as recognised by the Malaysian Book of Records (MBR), died last weekend after being admitted to the hospital on August 11. He was 113.

Seliman anak Bandang died at 5.20am on Saturday at the Saratok Hospital, Sarawak, according to news reports citing his son, Mulok Seliman.

He was recognised by MBR in 2021 as the oldest man in Malaysia at 111 years old at the time.

Funeral rites are scheduled today at the Mulok longhouse in Krian, Saratok.

Seliman would be laid to rest tomorrow morning at the Klua Christian cemetery, according to family member Micky Chang.

He leaves behind two children, nine grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

When he was admitted to the hospital, Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri paid him a visit.

Facebook page Edisi Kalaka Saratok shared a post about the visit, saying Mohamad’s family shared close ties with Seliman’s family.

“YB Tuan Haji Mohamad used to visit Seliman’s long house when he was a child. This evening, he was accompanied by his sister and they visited Seliman and family,” the post shared.

Seliman was born on March 21, 1910, and took over the record of being Malaysia’s oldest person from previous record holder Annamah Abukutty who was born in 1911.

Earlier in March this year, his grandson Michael Bandang Tinggai posted a family birthday celebration held for Seliman where he also held up the oldest man certificate issued by MBOR. – The Vibes, August 21, 2023
