GEORGE TOWN – Deals worth thousands of ringgit are expected at this weekend’s Penang chapter of the Malaysian Association of Travel and Tour Agents (Matta) travel fair at the Spice Setia Arena conference centre in Sg Ara.

State executive councillor for tourism Wong Hon Wai and Penang Matta chapter chairperson Carolyn Leong Mei Ching told a joint media briefing that up to 260 booths have been reserved to cater to thousands of visitors seeking bargains to travel inbound and outbound.

Leong promised a balanced array of deals for both inbound and outbound while the official airline for the event is the Malaysian Aviation Group, whose flagship carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) will offer good deals to Adelaide (South Australia).

This is in conjunction with the special golden jubilee celebrations of the sister city status which George Town in Penang enjoys with Adelaide.

Francis Light founded Penang as a British colonial territory in 1786 and 50 years later, his eldest son Colonel William Light founded Adelaide.

Leong also disclosed that airliners such as Vietnam Air, Qantas, China Airlines, Thai Airways, Citilink, Qatar Air, Singapore International Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Xiamen Air, are offering deals on airfares to various destinations.

There would also be state tourism authorities participating – from Perlis to Perak, Pahang, and the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada).

There are also cruise liner packages up for grabs, Leong said.

Domestic carrier Air Asia is also taking part – it will be offering deals on its Penang to Hong Kong direct flights. There was no confirmation on whether there would be good deals accorded for domestic airfares.

There are more than 60 lucky draw prizes worth RM60,000 up for grabs at the fair. – The Vibes, September 27, 2023
